  • What is the difference between the Webtv Plus unit by Philips/Magnavox and the Webtv Classic unit?

There are a lot of similarities and many differences between the Webtv Plus unit (the enhanced Webtv unit) and the Classic Webtv unit (the basic Webtv unit).

One of my favorite features about the Webtv units in general (because I travel a lot) is that you can take them anywhere in North America and, "at no extra charge", connect the Webtv unit to any regular TV set and any regular telephone line and you'll have the same Internet access as you would at home.

Your Webtv Unit will automatically dial up to the closest Webtv ISP (Internet Service Provider). You can't do that with a computer and this option's not available on the satellite dish/Webtv Plus combo.

However, that having been said, here are a list of differences that I feel are important:

  • 1) The Webtv Plus unit comes with an interior 56k modem. The Classic comes with an interior 33k modem. This makes the Plus faster when surfing the net and sending/receiving e-mail.
  • 2) The Webtv Plus unit comes with a built-in printer port and is compatible on more than 50 different printers. With the Webtv Classic unit you can only print if you purchase the sometimes hard-to-find and rather expensive ($50.00 to $70.00) printer adaptor. Too, the Classic is only compatible on the 400, 600 and 700 series Hewlett Packard printers.
  • 3) The Webtv Plus unit comes with video/audio in and output jacks for up-loading pictures onto the Internet. Too, it's great for designing your own web page. This feature is not available on the Classic.
  • 4) The Webtv Plus by Philips/Magnavox (this feature is not available on the Sony Webtv Plus unit) comes with a microphone jack for sending voice mails instead of always having to write e-mails. This feature is not available on the Classic.
  • 5) The Webtv Plus by Philips/Magnavox comes with the exclusive Web eye or IR Blaster (Infrared) (this feature is not available on the Sony Webtv Plus unit) enabling the user to virtually sit anywhere in his/her room and receive a perfect signal while using the infrared cordless remote control or cordless keyboard.
  • 6) The Webtv Plus has a 1.08G hard drive for memory and future game purposes. The Webtv Classic unit has no hard drive.
  • 7) The Webtv Plus unit has many TV features, for example, it comes with a seven day "extensive" TV guide.
  • This is not available on the Classic. Again, we are not to think that by this description there's a huge difference between the two units but that one unit is enhanced (the Webtv Plus) and the other unit is basic (the Webtv Classic).
  • All sales are final! All bidders will be obligated to buy and will send payment within 7 days of the close of the auction.
  • These are "renewed" Webtv Plus units and are as "brand new". If they are not please inform me immediately via e-mail.
  • Since our Webtv Plus units & keyboards come directly from the factory we do not handle them and they have not been opened.
  • If you should need warranty work (not likely) you must wait approximately 2 to 3 weeks from the purchase date and you will need to deal directly with Philips. All warranty information is located on the warranty card which is included in with every unit.
  • Buyer adds $20.00 for insured s/h in continental U.S.A. Visa/Mastercard ($5.00 processing fee), Money order/cashiers check ship same day, personal checks wait to clear. (5-8 days). Email if you have any questions.

    Happy bidding!!
