1. Where can I find a book of internet addresses, and short descriptions of sites?

I think that the number of sites and their content is growing so fast, that no book can keep you up to date.  The latest magazines are good sources of site recomendations and reviews, also friends and people with similar interests.  The best way to look things up, however, is to use search engines available on the net or sites like Yahoo! or Google or your ISP's home page.

2. How do I add a signature file to my e-mail?

Let's assume you are using Eudora -- other e-mail programs work similarly.  Click on the Tools button, click on Signatures (opens the signatures window), double-click on Standard (or Alternate, depending on which one you want to define) which opens a blank window in which you can create the text message for your signature, type in your signature text, then click on X in order to close the window and save your new signature.

3. What's the best way to SURF or search the Internet?

Spent hours searching for some obscure piece of information without success? Go to www.yahoo.com or try a search engine such as www.excite.com or www.altavista.com which are easy to use.

4. How do I update my web browser and upgrade my browser security level to the top "128 bit" protection?

These are important questions about browser security and upgrading web browsers: Microsoft INTERNET EXPLORER and Netscape NAVIGATOR.  The best way to upgrade Windows is to use your browser. Internet Explorer has a TOOLS option at the top (next to HELP). Click on TOOLS and you will see a "Windows Update" option. Click-it and you will be taken to the Microsoft Update page.

You will be required to DOWNLOAD files.  Don't worry if you haven't ever done this.  If you like adventure then just dive in and follow the directions and information provided. If not, then contact the club to find out how it is done.

The Product Updates area is a catalog of fixes, updates, and enhancements to Windows and many programs that work with Windows. The catalog allows you to "shop" for components that will make your computer work better.

Browse through the catalog, select as many components as you would like, and download and install them straight from the Web to your computer.  If you would like, the catalog can determine which updates and enhancements will work specifically with your computer, based on the software you already have installed.

How does it work?

When you first come to the Product Updates page, Windows Update scans your system to see what you have installed and gives you a list of suggested components. This scan is done on your computer to ensure the safety and privacy of your system information. None of this information is sent to Microsoft or over the Internet. This system check assures that you will get the most up-to-date and accurate versions of anything you choose to download from the site. When the list of components appears on the page, you can browse it, decide which components you want, and download them right to your computer. A few things to note:

Be sure to download any Critical Updates recommended for your system.
Critical Updates will fix known problems (such as security issues) specific to your computer.

Updating device drivers: You can now download device drivers from the Product Updates catalog. A device driver is a program that controls a piece of hardware (such as a printer, monitor, disk drive, or video card) that is attached to your computer. Many device drivers come installed with Windows, but in some cases (for example, when you buy a new piece of hardware) you may need a driver that was not available when you installed Windows. To keep up with the newest hardware, software makers are constantly adding new drivers to the Product Updates site.
