Giving Away Your Old Computer

Before you give away your old computer:

  • Save all the personal files you wish to transfer to your new computer on discs. You will probably want to compress or zip them, in order make the transfer quicker.
  • Permanently remove all your personal files, by reformatting the drive. This operation removes all files on the hard drive - including program files and the computer's operating system.
  • Re-install the software and program files, without your personal files.

If you are unsure how to do this, ask an expert or someone with experience in these procedures.

1,000 Km Service

Computers, like cars, need tuning up when they start to react sluggishly. This means cleaning out all the old and corrupted files, from (1) Internet files, (2) Temporary files -- those with tmp or ~ in their title, (3) Unwanted cookies, as well as to (4) Empty the recycle bin, (5) Defragment your hard drive, and (6) Scan your hard drive for errors.

Searching the Net

Spending hours searching and surfing for some obscure piece of information without success? google.com or Yahoo.com might help. Also try www.firstgov.gov for U.S. Government information. It's a great site!
