Local Area Network (LAN)
Connecting computers together within a sales organization is a very positive step in improving internal communications. A LAN allows all computers to communicate with one another via:
The common method of connecting computers together is to use one computer as a server and connecting each of the individual or client computers to it via Ethernet cables. Microsoft Windows NT is a very popular operating software for the server. It is not necessary for the individual client computers to use Windows NT. They may use Windows 95/98 as their operating system. The LAN appears as additional disk drives to each client computer. The server can be setup for private access areas as well as common areas.
Microsoft Outlook, which is included with Windows, may be used to handle both internal and Internet e-mail.
Proxy gateway software, such as Wingate, should be used to connect to the Internet.
The server computer should have a tape backup and/or RAID system and an uninterruptable power supply (ups) to ensure that loss of data does not occur.
