Blow
PLOT: George Jung (Johnny Depp)rises from mediocrity to excessive playboy-hood. His aspirations begin innocently: he doesn't want to work, but wants to have plenty of money. He stumbles into dealing weed. After a brief detention in the Federal Prision, is introduced to the lucrativeness of distributing cocaine.

OPINION: Amazing. I've been stoked about this movie for a while (I became a fan of Depp's after Fear and Loating in Las Vegas . I'm glad it lived up to my expectations. A surprising amout of cheese at the end, but the bonus is that not once during the film there was a moral take on what Jung chose to do. Bravo for that.

Dancer in the Dark
PLOT:A struggling Czech immigrant mother, Selma (Bjork),is fanatical for musicals, her convictions and saving her son from a life burdened by inevitable blindness. Working double shifts, Selma religiously saves money for the operation to save her son's eyesight, which is the reason that herself and her son migrated from the Czech republic. All the while, a friendship develops between her landlords.

OPINION: The is by far one of the most moving performances that I have witnessed in the last few years. Artistic camera work illustrates the difference between the daydreams set to Bjork's voice in Hollywood big-band style and the harsh reality of blindness, betrayal and heartbreak.

The Caveman's Valentine
PLOT: Romulus Ledbetter (Samuel L. Jackson), "The Caveman" is a dillusuional homeless man living on the edge of a city park in a make-shift cave. A graduate of Juliard and a musical genius in his own rite, Romulus' own daughter thinks he is crazy, he is obsessed with the wife he left behind and he is controlled by a man in a looming skyscraper. His only way of keeping "sanity" is by introverting into his head full of sonatas, dancing moths and 'brain typhoons'.

OPINION: The plot itself sucks. But Samuel L. Jacksons' performance was inspirational. But that inspiration was limited to a block of 10 minutes throughout the movie. The most impressive blocks of the movie were when Romulus falls into an brain typhoon and his music shrieks along with the cries of the dancing moths. Sounds crazy, but I didn't write the script.
