Greenspond Island is about ten miles south
of Newtown, and was settled in the late 1600's. Many of the families
in the Newtown area had ancestors who first settled at Greenspond. Some
of the homes reflect the history of the town, which once was the major
centre of Bonavista North and had a population of about 2,000. Greenspond
was isolated for many years but is now connected to the mainland by a causeway.
