CHRISTMAS
This poem was written in 1997 after determining that we would not be home for the holidays. No decorations were placed in the house that year.
WRAPPINGS AND TRAPPINGS
No lights, no stockings, none of the trimmings,
No decorated tree to be found.
The neighbors' homes and stores are brimming
With Christmas sights and sounds.

We will not be here Christmas Day,
That is the only reason.
If our intentions were to stay,
Home would reflect the season.

But why the cause to celebrate?
The colorful gift wrappings?
The reason that the Bible states
Gets lost in all the trappings.

A little baby sent by God
Was ransom for the earth.
His parents' feet, the country trod,
To find a place for his birth.

A brilliant star shone oh so bright
To show the way to the Christ child.
Jesus was born that very night
To Mary, so holy and mild.

The meaning of Christmas is often lost
Amongst so many things.
We only think about the cost
This holiday season brings.

So when we get a little time
To reflect on our behavior,
We think of how that star did shine
To show the world a savior.
This poem reflects Christmas in Florida.
THIS DOESN'T FEEL LIKE CHRISTMAS
This doesn't feel like Christmas,
There are no cold winds blowing.
This doesn't feel like Christmas,
It isn't even snowing!

No hats and scarves around our heads,
No mittens on our hands.
Bare feet and shorts are worn instead,
While walking on the sand.

The gentle breezes warm us,
As Jesus warmed the earth.
For this is really Christmas,
To celebrate his birth!
