Norddal bridge-A piece of art
"The first preparations started as early
as the summer of 1900. Stone had to be quarried in the vicinity, sandpits had to be
located to make mortar, and these materials and cement had to be transported to the site.
The plans for the bridge were ready in May 1901 in some time tunnels were blasted out on
both sides of the ravine and timber for the scaffolding was brought up.
The various part of the bridge were brought up during the winter, having been
prefabricated in Germany. A German company (MAN) was in charge of the construction. In
April 1902, Spiess, the engineer in charge, and his smiths arrived to start assembling the bridge.
In July, the superstructure was transferred directly from railway wagons standing on a
temporary track running through the Norddal tunnel. Finally, on August 31 the job
was finished and the bridge could be handed over to the Norwegian Railway Company. The
task of laying the rails could begin."

"The first ore train crossed the bridge on 15 November 1902 and the last one on 1
October 1988. Then a new stretch of line was opened north of the bridge, near where the
British firm had suggested placing the line a century earlier.
The bridge was used to transport
1000 million tons of iron ore for 86 years. Now it is a protected historical monument and
is waiting to be made serviceable once more, this time to show visitors the technical
achievements from the turn of the century."
