Mogwai
A new one, Tokyo '99, is on here now (2/11/00)
NEW! Tokyo, Japan Nov. 22,
1999 [A]
Setlist:
Mogwai Fear
Satan/Cody/Christmas Steps/Christmas Song/Small Children In the
Background/Stanley Kubrick/Helicon 2/Ex-Cowboy/Kappa/Helicon
1/Like Herod (cut)
A great, great new show. The sound is superb, the only faults are the seldom microphone sounds of scraping against some sort of material, sounds like a concealed mike or something! Who knows, but it sounds great. Plus, they play Christmas Song off of the New EP, which is pretty rare. Like Herod is only about 1/4 there, but that's alright. It's on every other one of my tapes and is not that different from any of the other 1999 performances.
Bruxelles, Belgium
May 5 1999 [A-/B+]
Setlist:
May nothing but happiness come through your
door/Kappa/Christmas steps/Cody/Helicon 2/Small children in the
background/Helicon 1/Like Herod/My father my kingdom (Jewish
traditional)
Sounds very good for an audience recording, not much distortion at all and the sound is very clear. Like Herod live=greatness. The Jewish song is a track they have collaborated with Arthur Baker for his upcoming album (I have very little info on this, for more see the "other recordings" section of the official Mogwai site) and it is really cool. Only nine songs, but there's about 80 min of show here.
The Break Room
(Seattle, Washington) Sept. 14 1999 [A]
Setlist:
Mogwai fear satan/Christmas Steps/Small
Children in the Background/May Nothing But Happiness Come Through
Your Door/Summer/Stanley Kubrick/Ex-Cowboy/Kappa/Helicon 1/Like
Herod
I'm not sure as to the origins of this recording, but it sounds very very good. If it's and audience recording, it is surely on DAT with great mics. The new single "Stanley Kubrick" is an amazing song, as is the version of "Christmas Steps" they play here. "Summer" also rocks very hard. A great show, I think it's better than the Brussels one above. About 90+ min. fills a 90 min XL2 completely.
The Horseshoe
(Toronto) Sept. 8 1999 [B+/-]
Setlist:
Superheroes of BMX/Yes!
I am a long way from home/Xmas Steps/Tuner/Ex Cowboy/May
Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door/Helicon 2/Stanley
Kubrick/Small Children In the Background/A-70/Helicon 1/Kappa
(muffed)/Like Herod (partially cut at end)
Just one or two stops before the show above, this is also from the '99 tour. The quality is a little less (very very quiet in the quiet parts, had to turn the volume in my walkman almost all the way up), but other than that it sounds OK. A wider selection of songs than Seattle, my second tape to include my mogwai-favorite "Yes! I am..." (see below for other one) It's such a great song. Plus they start to play Kappa, then screw up and head right into Herod. Amusing.
Pukkelpop Festival
(Hasselt, Belgium) Aug. 23 '97 [B+]
Setlist:
Summer/Honey/Helicon 2/Like Herod/Helicon
1/Katrien/Angels vs Aliens
A great MYT-era show. "Summer" sounds the best that I've ver heard. Honey is a Spacemen 3 cover that sounds great live. Another gem is the rarely-played-live "Katrien." Live standard Helicon 1 and Like Herod are also in great form. Great sound quality as well, what a show! About 40 min.
BBC Evening Session
March 10 1999 [B-]
Setlist:
Helicon 1/May nothing but happyness come
through your door/Like Herod/Chocky
All other sessions by any other band look like wee mice compared to this one. It's one of the longest sessions ever, and as Steve says, "the sounds is just huge." That's a good description. Unfortunately, the sound isn't prime, but it's definetely enough for enjoyment.
London, England
April 6 1997 [B+]
Setlist:
Helicon 1/Ithica/Summer/Yes! I am a long
way from home (!)/Stereo Dee
It's only 5 songs, but this the only tape that I have (correction, second now) that has "Yes! I am a long way from home" (my favorite mogwai song of all time) and "Stereo Dee" on it. Two great songs, plus one of their best live songs, "Summer." Greatness. Sounds good too.
Rochester, NY
Dec 1 1998 [B+]
Setlist:
Mogwai Fear
Satan/Ex-Cowboy/Rollerball/Christmas Steps/May nothing but
happyness.../Helicon 1
A radio broadcast recorded to tape. Mogwai Fear Satan feeds in about a 1/4 of the way through, and a small portion of Xmas Steps is cut for a radio station ID thing. My onbly tape with "Rollerball," a great song of of "Fuck the Curfew."
Bowlie Weekender
Camber, UK April 24 1999 [B]
Setlist:
Kappa/24 hours
Only the first two songs from their Bowlie performance, but having the Joy Division cover "24 Hours" is great. A small portion of the song is cut, though.
