’ve decided to take
a whole entry and talk about my little boy, since I haven’t really had
the chance to do that since he was born, and since we recently celebrated
his six-month birthday.
He is definitely turning into a little person, with his own likes and
dislikes and habits and mannerisms. He wakes up every morning, usually
before my wife and I are awake, and he stares at the light coming in through
the window and starts talking to himself. All it takes is one look
from Mommy or Daddy and he breaks out into a smile.
He’s just now beginning to expand his repertoire of foods. He’s
kind of partial to rice cereal, although it looks and smells like kindergarten
paste to me. He likes sweet potatoes, but has absolutely no interest
in green beans. He makes this horrible face that looks like somebody
tried to poison him or something. I think Mom has even gotten him
hooked on Dairy Queen ice cream (although he’ll have to wait a while longer
before he can enjoy more than half-a-spoonful at a time).
There is a comic strip called “Baby Blues” – if you’ve never seen it,
check it out. Anyway, the baby in the strip – his name is Hamish
– used to transport himself by rolling around instead of crawling.
Our Little One is, so far, doing the exact same thing. He can make
it halfway across the room by rolling. But when he tries to crawl,
he gets up on his hands and knees and can’t seem to figure out what to
do next, so he either falls flat on his face, or he ends up scooting backwards
instead.
Despite our best efforts to the contrary, he’s starting to like TV –
and I think we like that he likes TV, because putting him in the swing
in front of the television is basically the only time we get to put him
down at all. I think I’ve mentioned before that he likes football,
and he seems to be interested in auto racing (I’ll have to work on baseball
with him once the season starts). My wife has done some testing with
him, sitting him down in front of shows and seeing what gets a response
from him, and he also seems partial to “Rugrats”, “:Blue’s Clues”, and
something I’ve never heard of before called “Rolie Polie Olie”. “Sesame
Street” just seems to annoy him, and we’re trying to totally avoid “Teletubbies”
– we had it on for a few seconds while flipping through the channels, and
– I am not making this up – saw Tinky-Winky, who you may remember is the
Teletubbie rumored to be gay, trying on a skirt.
