Part 3

Gather Your Stuff...

This is the good part...It's time to gather stuff to put on your cosmic ray hat...A good place to start is that little [sometimes big, depending on your nature] box of stuff you've been saving since you were a little kid... With any luck, your mom didn't sell it all at a yard sale...
Pick out items that can easily be attached to your hat with twist ties [I prefer the plastic coated one's that don't rust], safety pins, wire or glue [works sometimes]...If you really feel like the piece is good and can't figure out how to attach it put it in one of those onion bags you get at the grocery store or drill a hole in it...

Stuff to attach...

Save the things you normally throw away in your normal life...i.e. plastic bag closers, disposable razors, plastic bottle rings & tops, 'the pill' holders, cracker ties and other things that would usually end up in the land fill, but which will look good on your CRDH...If you know someone that works in a restaurant ask them to save these types of things for you... A crest on your hat made of gallon jug opener rings looks great...
Look for stuff at yard sales where other's mothers are selling boxes of memories...If you go late in the day, offer a dollar or two for a whole box of leftovers and say they won't have to lug it back inside...This usually works!!! Thrift stores often have boxes of useless stuff in the back, ask for it...And if you see something while you are walking down the street that looks interesting pick it up, take it home and attach it to your hat!!!

Prepare To Attach...

Here the going gets rough, so the deflection builder goes shopping...Buy 6 or 7 packs of safety pins and a couple rolls of twist ties...String up all your objects on the twist tie wire, be sure to add a safety pin at each end and a pin every 4 inches or so...Once you have several feet of cosmic ray deflection items strung, you'll be ready to go...

Attach with this...

OK, you've collected a bunch of stuff and strung it on the string of your choice...You should have about 3 or 4 strings totaling about 6 to 8 feet...If you have a cloth hat use your safty pins and attach around the bottom of the hat... Make a second ring about an inch higher and so on till the entire hat is covered...
Or you could zigzag around... On my first hat, I painted a red strip down the middle of the hat about an inch wide and kept two long strings of junk separated by the stripe...

Go on to Part 4 -- THE FINISHED HEADPIECE

Here's the original leaflet of The Hat Comes First, in large gif format. You should be able to print these front and back and have a hard copy...If you have any problem, please let me know, I don't have a printer, so I haven't tried this yet... ''The Hat Comes First''... Front Here's the Back
