Poet: The girl/guy who came up with haikus
What a nifty way to communicate! Five syllables, seven syllables, five syllables. Just long enough to get a point across in a poetic fashion without being wordy. Personally, I think people ought to go around talking in Haikus all the time.
Or maybe we should limit e-mail messages to Haiku format? That
might get rid of all those pesky junk-mails. Is it possible to
put a chain letter in Haiku format? Alright, so this isn't really a review. I'm still getting the hang of this. -9/11/99
Book: Bruce Sterling A Good Old Fashioned Future
A series of short stories taking place in the near future, I picked this one up without any preconceptions and was amazed at the level of engagement offered by the author. This stuff is up there with William Gibson's best, which isn't too surprising (I later discovered the two had collaborated on other projects). Not only are the ideas of interest, like the social whirlwinds capturing one of Sterling's protagonists, but they are presented and linked in a compelling literary fashion. The book stands as yet one more example of why scientists (and social scientists in particular) should pay attention to science fiction.
