Untitled(ma-jiang and pa-jiang)

This is a collaborative performance piece with artist Miho Shimizu and me. It is still to this date, 7/12/98, a very early stage...therefore it is seriously fresh from the mind...and sketchbooks.

Ma-jiang is 'pregnant' and I am the 'father'...or the man beside her and supporting her(Pa-jiang)... What exactly it is about is quite hard to describe at this moment. I see it as a piece of work which tries to negotiate the gap between art and life...(as Rauschenberg suggests art is)...it is in fact showing a relationship between two person. It started with a thought of having a baby...then we made the sculpture that ties around Ma-jiang's stomache to create the illusion of her being pregnant. A lot of people actually were convinced that she was pregnant.

SORRY but Ma-jiang is washing the dishes because Pa-jiang just did the cooking. Pa-jiang is not macho/has chauvinistic ideas. It is collaborative...Next time I will show Pa-jiang doing house work too!

'Releasing the Balloon' action, Brighton, England

Ma-jiang knitted the figure and the figure's hand is holding on to a balloon. After taking the 'figure' around, we released it to the wind and the wind took it away. We watched it go wildly into the sea and slowly out of sight.
