If you have a web page that gets lots of hits, you have probably noticed that you are getting a lot more junk e-mail. Once I got on Mindspring, I noticed that I didn't get junk e-mail like I had gotten on AOL and on Juno. But when I put up a web page and the hits climbed over 2000, the junk mail started to appear in my mail box with frightening regularity. I wondered about how to stop this and wondered what was causing it. One day I ran across a web page, the URL of which I have forgotten, that was dedicating to stopping e-mail spiders. What's a spider, you ask? It's a program that searches the world wide web for e-mail addresses. It goes to a page, collects e-mail addresses from that page, then goes via links on that page to other pages and collects e-mail addresses there and so on and so forth. It's a vicious cycle. This page encouraged webmasters to add an "X" in front of their e-mail address in the following fashion... "Xkatiecauthen@mindspring.com". The spider still picks up the address, but does not realize that it's invalid. When a junk e-mailer sends out their junk e-mail, any message sent to that address will be bounced back to them. The more people who do this to their address, the more bounces the e-mailer gets, hopefully soon discouraging them from sending junk e-mail. So, you will notice that all e-mail addresses linked on my page have an "X" in front. If you use these links to send me mail, please remove the "X" before sending the mail. Otherwise, your mail will be bounced back to you. After reading all of that, click here to send me mail. I can also be reached on ICQ.
