The IBM NetVista Thin Client Express Service Utility (TCE Service Utility) is a Windows-based program that provides software update services for the NetVista Thin Client Express models. 1.2 You can find the latest version of the Thin Client Express Reference publications at the following URL: http://www.ibm.com/nc/pubs 1.3 You can find the latest updates to the NetVista Thin Client Express Service Utility at the following URL: http://service.boulder.ibm.com/nc 1.4 Available images When reflashing your flash card you will be asked to select which image you want. The first three images listed below contain the Netscape browser and Dialer support, which are both new for this release. All six images contain the original V1R1 applications. 1. NS-x86-2200-e-032-010-03.BOM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.0 INSTALLATION ---------------- 2.1 Verifying system prerequisites You can install this release of the TCE Service Utility on the following operating systems: Windows NT Server 4.0 Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Windows 2000 Professional Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server If you are planning to install IBM Network Station Manager Version 2 Release 1 (NSM V2R1) on your Windows server after installing the TCE Service Utility, verify that you install NSM V2R1 Service Update 6 (or higher). If you installed NSM V2R1 on your Windows server before you install the TCE Service Utility, ensure that you updated your NSM V2R1 software with Service Update 6 (or higher). IBM does not support the installation of the TCE Service Utility on a Windows server that also runs NSM Version 1 Release 3 (V1R3), unless NSM V1R3 is coexisting on the same server with NSM V2R1 Service Update 6 (or higher). 2.2 Installing from the NetVista Thin Client Service Utilities CD The main installation menu automatically starts when you insert the installation CD. You can also manually start the main installation menu by running the following command: [CD drive]:\install.bat 2.3 Downloading the NetVista Thin Client Service Utilities from the Web You can find the latest version of the TCE Service Utility at the following URL: http://service.boulder.ibm.com/nc Follow the link to the NetVista Service Utilities in the download section. The TCE Service Utility is a single .exe file. Download this file to a temporary directory and run it to start the installation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.0 KNOWN PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS ------------------------------------------ 3.1 If you installed the TCE Service Utility on a server that runs both NSM V1R3 and NSM V2R1, you may encounter problems if you later uninstall NSM V2R1 and then uninstall NSM V1R3. To ensure correct operation, you need to reconfigure the TCE Service Utility by running the following command after you uninstall NSM V1R3. [drive]:\NetVista\enod\bin\NVNetConfig -create 3.2 If you experience server-side problems while attempting to update or reflash a NetVista Thin Client Express model, you should verify the status of the Service Utility network support services. To verify the status of the network support services, follow these steps: 1. From the Windows taskbar, click Start-->Settings-->Control Panel. 2. From the Control Panel window, double-click Services. 3. From the Services window, verify that the following services indicate "Started" in the status column: - IBM NFS Server - IBM RPC Portmapper - IBM Time Protocol Server If the network support services are not started, you can start them from the Services window. To start the network support services, follow these steps: 1. From the Services window, select the service that you want to start. 2. Click Start. If the service does not start, check the Windows Event Log for a specific reason and, if necessary, contact your IBM Service Representative. 3. Repeat the procedure for any other services that you want to start. 4.
