Please get an additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.12 (or higher), and update Embedded Controller Program in the system with it if necessary. What This Package Does ---------------------- This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. Note: The "Internal Network Device" and "Internal Wireless Device" options are found by clicking Config then click Network. <1.43 - 1.43 (1UET93WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.12 (or higher). - (Fix) The IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter with the old device driver (version 2.4.1.7 or lower) does not work with BIOS version 1.42 (1UET92WW). - (Fix) The computer may be immediately powered off at the password prompt screen after returning from hibernation if the Power-on Password is set and "Require password after hibernate" option in the IBM BIOS Setup utility is set to enabled. - (Fix) The correct passphrase is not accepted at the passphrase prompt screen of the UVM (User Verification Manager) function of the IBM Client Security Software after returning from standby mode if all of the following conditions are met: 1. "Timer Wake with Battery Operation" option in the IBM BIOS Setup Utility is set to disabled. 2. In the Windows XP Power Options properties, both "System standby" and "System hibernates" for "Running on batteries" are set. The timer setting of "System hibernates" is longer than that of "System standby". 3. The computer is running on the battery. 4. The computer goes into standby mode by following the timer setting of the "System Standby" option, and then is in idling state longer than the time which is set in the "System hibernates" option. 5. Let the computer resume normal operation from standby mode. <1.44 - 1.44 (1UET94WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.12 (or higher). - (Fix) The clock frequency (speed) of CPU is not set to the highest speed in battery mode even if "Intel(R) SpeedStep technology" option of "Power" of "Config" in the "IBM BIOS Setup Utility" menu is set to Enabled and its "Mode for Battery" option is set to "Maximum Performance". <1.55 - 1.55 (1UETA5WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.12 (or higher). - (Fix) "Access IBM" may be launched after resuming from hibernation State - (New) Support for new models based on the Intel Pentium M Processor 758. Note: ThinkPad models with the Intel Pentium M Processor 733 require the Embedded Controller Program Version 1.32 (or higher). <1.65 - 1.65 (1UETB5WW)> Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.12 (or higher). - (Fix) Bluetooth LED may not be turned on/off by pressing Fn + F5 keys under non-ACPI operating system environment. - (Fix) Warning Beep may sound when you eject system from UltraBase X4 even though system is attached to UltraBase X4 with standby state. - (Fix) LCD display may be turned off after entering the secondary hard drive password. This symptom may appear on following condition: System with UltraBase X4 should be in standby mode and then attach secondary hard drive which has hard drive password. After attaching hard drive, System resumes from standby mode and password prompt appears and then enter password. LCD display may be turned off just after entering password. Updating BIOS ------------- Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows 2000/XP and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Extract this package onto the hard drive. 5. Click the Start button, then click Run. 6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you extracted the package. (e.g. C:\Temp\1UUJ13US.EXE) Then click OK. Hint: For unattended update, specify the file name with options "-s -a -s". (e.g. C:\Temp\1UUJ13US.EXE -s -a -s) The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. 7. Follow the instructions on the screen. Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear on the screen. Example of a message) "DeviceIoControl() returns 2. Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen appears. 8. Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 9. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 10. Select Update system program and follow the instruction on the screen. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Initializing BIOS ----------------- In some cases, it may be a good idea to try BIOS initialization when you have some troubles. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The IBM BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by BIOS and others. C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS D0000-D3FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*4) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*5) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Note: *4: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. *5: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in IBM BIOS Setup Utility. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D4000-DBFFF But certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems. The addresses vary and depend on the design of each Operating System. Restrictions ------------ Passwords can be set with the passphrase feature, however, that feature is supported by Windows 2000 and Windows XP only. Remarks ------------ *1 Support for IBM Active Protection System. Embedded Controller Program:1.12(1UHT58WW) or higher and IBM Active Protection System (APS) driver 1.20b or higher are required to enable IBM Active Protection System.
