Version 1.29 Issue date June 5, 2007 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT THIS PACKAGE DOES This package is used to update the BIOS (system program) stored in the ThinkPad computer to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE Version 1.29 [Important Updates] Nothing. [New functions or enhancements] - Improvement of controlling displayed screens with the external monitor. [Problem fixes] Nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED There are two ways for version check. (A) On Windows (B) On BIOS Setup Utility (A) Windows 1. Start the ThinkPad Configuration program. Click Start, select All Programs (or Programs), select ThinkVantage, then click ThinkPad Configuration. 2. Click the System Information icon. 3. Click the BIOS information tab. BIOS version and Embedded Controller version will be displayed. 4. Click OK to exit. (B) BIOS Setup Utility 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Check the BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 5. Turn off the computer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES - This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.04 or higher. Obtain the additional package, Embedded Controller Program Version 1.04 or higher, and update the Embedded Controller Program in the system with it. - If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the BIOS, update BIOS first. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATING THE BIOS Notes: - If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the BIOS. To determine if you should update the BIOS, refer to the Version Information section. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - Depending on the operating system configuration, restarting the operating system and rerunning this BIOS update utility may be required. In this case, the following message will appear. "DeviceIoControl() returns 2 Please restart your operating system and execute the BIOS or Embedded Controller update utility again." - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in the RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) or similar environment. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU DO THAT WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. Manual Update 1. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the target computer. 2. Start Windows XP, 2000 and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 3. Open an Explorer and locate the directory where the file was saved. 4. Double-click the saved file. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows will shut down automatically and ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility screen will appear. 6. Select "Read this first..." from the menu and carefully read the information that appears. 7. Press the Esc key to return to the menu. 8. Select Update system program and follow the instructions on the screen. After the update has been completed, the system is automatically turned off. Finally delete the file saved in the step 3. Unattended Update This procedure is intended only for system administrators. The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. - Refer to the Manual Update section, and download and extract the files. - At the command line, execute BIOS Update Utility (xxxxxxxx.exe) with the -s -a -s options. (For example) [Path where the files were extracted]\xxxxxxxx.exe -s -a -s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INITIALIZING BIOS BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS settings: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 4. Press the F9 key to load default configuration. 5. Select Yes. 6. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 7. Select Yes. 8. Power off or restart the computer. (Addition) - (Fix) If the computer is forced to shut down by special conditions (Example: pressing the power button for a few seconds or if battery runs down in suspend mode), the computer may not work after power on. <1.27> (70ET67WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.04 or higher. - (New) Presentation Director can switch to the unknown external display which the computer fails to detect. - (Fix) When running on battery power, high pitch noise sound may be audible while a USB1.1 device is connected. - (Fix) After closing and then opening the LCD, location of icons on the Microsoft Windows desktop may be changed. (Note) To resolve this problem, after updating the BIOS with this package, the following display driver must be installed, again. Video driver (Intel 900/950/910GML/915GM/940GML/945GM) Version 6.14.10.4693 or higher <1.26> (70ET66WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.04 or higher. - (Fix) Floppy disk access error may occur on the floppy disk drive connected to the docking station. - (Fix) A meaningless message appears by pressing the F12 key to display the boot list. <1.24> (70ET64WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.04 or higher. - (New) Support for ThinkPad NumLock. A new ThinkPad NumLock option is added to Keyboard/Mouse of Config menu in BIOS Setup Utility. Settings [Independent] : The NumLock on the ThinkPad computer can be disabled independently regardless of the NumLock state of the external keyboard. If the NumLock on the ThinkPad computer is enabled, the NumLock on the external keyboard will also be enabled. [Synchronized] : The NumLock on both the ThinkPad computer and the external keyboard are synchronized. - (Fix) Intel Pentium M Processor and Centrino logos displayed on screen after power-on has been modified. - (Fix) The computer may hang if the hard drive is damaged. <1.23> (70ET63WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) Support for new types of memory. - (Fix) When the LCD is closed and opened, the screen resolution may be changed to 800x600 very intermittently. <1.22> (70ET62WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) A new option to allow the system to boot without pressing the Esc key in the BIOS Setup when the 2010 error (An unsupported hard disk is used or the firmware of IBM/Lenovo hard disk is old) is displayed. To change the setting, go to 'BIOS Setup menu', 'Startup' and then 'Boot after message for HDD...'. (Note) Use the supported hard disk or update the firmware of IBM/Lenovo hard disk for safe. - (Fix) The computer may not boot. <1.21> (70ET61WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (Fix) CGA font characters are not displayed on the screen with programs for DOS. <1.20> (70ET60WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - [Important] The computer may go into standby mode freely and then hang even if the standby timer in Power properties is disabled when any type of optical disks (such like DVD, CD-R drive) is detached from the computer. - (Fix) A CardBus Controller setting was wrong. - (Fix) The computer may hang up when a boot device is changed in Startup menu of BIOS Setup Utility. <1.19> (70ET59WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (Fix) With the BIOS version 1.17 (70ET57WW) or later, the system will shut down on Wake On Lan with a Ultrabay Slim Second Hard Drive adapter, even if no password is set in the second Hard Drive. - (Fix) An error appears on power-on, just after powering off at a password prompt with a newly attached USB storage device. - (Fix) The system may not start with some USB devices, attached to docking station or port replicator. <1.17> (70ET57WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) Enhancement of security function on power-on: When hard drive password is set, regardless of other passwords settings, Wake On Lan from power off state does not work. - (New) Support for ThinkPad R52 new models (of the Aug., 2005 announcement). <1.04> (70ET40WW) Note: This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program Version 1.01 or 1.03. - (New) Added new options to hide the following internal communication devices from Operating System in the BIOS Setup menu. C0000-CFFFF : Reserved for Video BIOS D0000-D3FFF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Notes: *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features. *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows operating systems. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386. D4000-DBFFF Note: Certain addresses in this area will be reserved for CardBus Controllers or others by Operating Systems.
