What This Package Does ---------------------- This ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility updates the BIOS (system program including the Embedded Controller(EC) program) stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions, or expand functions as noted below. (BIOS) - (Fix) The suspend beep volume does not coincide with a sound volume set by user. (BIOS) - (Fix) 1400 by 1050 pixels can be selected as a screen resolution by Display property or an application softtware. (BIOS) <1.09> - (New) Support of external 1920x1200 resolution wide display. (BIOS) - (Fix) Docking system in the Dock/Mini Dock sometimes does not appear to be complete.(BIOS) - (Fix) When the Password reset service of BIOS Setup is enabled (BIOS Setup->Security->Password->Password reset service) and Passphrase is disabled (BIOS Setup->Security->Password->Using Passphrase), POP(Power On Password) or HDP(Hard Disk Password) may not be unlocked with a registered password by the Password reset service. (BIOS) - (Fix) Even if CD-ROM speed is set to "Silent mode" in BIOS Setup, the "Silent mode" may be changed to "Normal mode".(BIOS) - (Fix) The process to recognize the kind of adapter connecting the system just after the OS boot was improved. (EC) - (Fix) A POST error message at no bootable device was changed.(BIOS) - (Fix) Display switching to external Display or Projector via Presentation Director is sometimes failed . (BIOS) - (Fix) HDD reset may not be issued to secondary HDD of Ultrabase when communication reset is required. (BIOS) - (Fix) Entering standby may fail in a certain case. USB host controller setting is changed to fix. (BIOS) - (Fix) The EC intermittenly hangs. (ThinkLight does not light.) (EC) <1.10> - (New) Upgraded to the latest microcode for Intel Core processor. - (Fix) Timeout may take more than 30 seconds if PXE (Preboot eXecution Environment) network boot fails. (BIOS) - (Fix) POST1820 error occurs on the following system condition. - Wireless WAN model, and - WWAN is disabled by BIOS Setup or Wireless hardware switch. (BIOS Setup->Config-> Network->Internal Wireless Device), and - An external USB Finger Print reader is connected to the left side USB port of the system or any USB port in the docking station. (BIOS) - (Fix) When a system with a USB floppy drive in Ultrabase is hot-docked, the USB floppy drive is intermittently not recognized. (BIOS) - (Fix) The battery may not continue to be charged after the system was resumed from Suspend or Hibernation mode even if the battery was charged before entering the power saving mode. (EC) <2.00f> - (New) Support for ThinkPad X60/X60s 2006 autumn model <2.02> - (New) Support for new chipset/processor by SMBIOS - (Fix) Wrong data may be written to hard drive, when EMM386.EXE of IBM PC-DOS is used. (BIOS) <2.03> - (Fix) Windows desktop Icon location may be changed after Lid open/close. (BIOS) Note: To resolve this problem, after updating the BIOS with this package, the following display driver must be installed, again. Video driver Intel 900/950/910GML/915GM/940GML/945GM Version 6.14.10.4693 or higher <2.04> - (Fix) Needs to enter a BIOS supervisor password after BIOS update to 7BETB9WW/2.00f or later version from 7BET50WW/1.08 (or older version), if the BIOS supervisor password is set at BIOS update. Note that this problem does not occur, once the system booted with BIOS 7BETB9WW or later version. If your X60 runs without problems after installing 7BETC2WW/2.03, no need to update to 7B9ETC3WW/2.04. <2.05> - (New) Maximum Graphics Memory size increases to 224MB. (BIOS) - (Fix) If the computer is forcibly shut down by special conditions (such like the power button being pressed for seconds or the battery down in suspend mode), the computer may not work after power on. (BIOS) - (Fix) The computer may be shutdown by a certain 3G GPRS card in the PC card slot. (EC) - (Fix) Once Active Protection System is disabled, it cannot be enabled again until the system is restarted. (EC) <2.06> - (New) Support of Microsoft Windows Vista. (BIOS) - (New) Support of Intel(R) Virtulization Technology. A new Intel(R) Virtulization Technology option is added to CPU of Config menu in BIOS Setup Utility. Config->CPU->Intel(R) Virtulization Technology The Intel(R) Virtulization Technology option is always set to "disabled" after the BIOS was updated or flashed. The option needs to be set "enabled" if necessary after BIOS update/flash. (BIOS) - (Fix) POST error 1804 may appear at system power on with some types of USB devices. (BIOS) - (Fix) When EMM386.EXE is used at system boot from PC-DOS on a USB memory key, the system may hang or the wrong data may be accessed on the hard drive while reading or writing. (BIOS) <2.07> - (Fix) "SATA Controller Mode Option" is changed to "Compatibility" when the system boots up without the primary Hard Drive. "SATA Controller Mode Option" is displayed in the BIOS Setup Utility. "Config"->"Serial ATA(SATA)"->"SATA Controller Mode Option" (BIOS) - (Fix) The SMBIOS structure which represents Modem jack(RJ-11) is not displayed. (BIOS) <2.09> - (Fix) On a system with Windows Vista, the system may display the following error message during each power on, then cannot boot from the hard drive. 2100: Initialization error on HDD(Main hard disk drive) - (Fix) On a system with Windows Vista, the display resolution changes to VGA mode(640x480) after the LCD cover is closed and opened. (BIOS) <2.10> [Important Updates] - This BIOS contains a critical processor microcode update to improve system reliability. Lenovo highly recommends that you apply this BIOS update. - (Fix) Upgraded to the latest microcode update for Intel Core 2 Duo processor. - (Fix) The CPU clock may down during charging the battery. (EC) <2.11> - (Fix) The system can fail to boot from an optical drive. (BIOS) <2.12> - (New) The firmware version of TPM chip was upped to 1.2.0B.0D. (BIOS) Note: BIOS update on the PC with Revision 0D TPM chip and with 7BETD1WW BIOS or later versions to 7BETD0WW or older versions is inhibited. - (Fix) Even if the password was not actually changed under CSS (Client Security Solution), a message showing it being changed may appear and authentication may be failed even by entering the password. (BIOS) <2.13> - (Fix) The data transfer rate is extremely slow using IBA(Intel Boot Agent) PXE protocol. (BIOS) - (Fix) An error may happen on updating the BIOS. (BIOS) - (Fix) Provided BIOS level solution for the issue of extended video model disabled after undock/dock operartion. (BIOS) - (Fix) Fingerprint authentication fails once at power-on time, power-on password prompt appears immediately. (BIOS) <2.14> - (Fix) The process of Fingerprint authentication at power-on was improved. (BIOS) - (Fix) Memory address more than 4GB can't be accessed under Vista WindowsPE. (BIOS) - (Fix) Intermittent errors, such as device unrecognized, may occur at wake-up after BIOS configuration was changed in BIOS Setup during hibenation. (BIOS) - (Fix) A Post error may intermittently occur at wake-up from hibernation after ThinkPad BIOS Setting for Windows was run. (BIOS) - (Fix) This BIOS contains a workaround of resolution change issue. When using an Intel Graphics model on a minidock with an external monitor set to SXGA, the resolution will intermittently be changed in certain docking/undocking situations switch to XGA. (BIOS) Updating BIOS ------------- Notes: - Remove the Power-on password prior to updating the BIOS in RDM (Remote Deployment Manager) environment or similar environment. - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the BIOS. - If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. - If a USB Diskette Drive is attached to your computer, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding. 1. Print these instructions or display on another computer. 2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer. 3. Start Windows Vista, XP, 2000 and logon with administrative privileges on the target computer. 4. Save this package onto the hard drive. 5. For Windows Vista, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, then click Run... For Windows XP, 2000, click Start, then click Run... 6. Specify the file name with the full path name where you saved the package, then click OK. Example: C:\Temp\7BUJ23US.EXE 7. Follow the instructions on the screen. 8. After the License Agreement, extract the package to an appropriate directory. Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7BUJ23US 9. For Windows Vista, click Start, select All Programs, select Accessories, then click Run... 10. Specify WINUPTP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the package. Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7BUJ23US\WINUPTP.EXE and then click OK. Note: For unattended update, specify the file name with option "-s". Example: C:\DRIVERS\FLASH\7BUJ23US\WINUPTP.EXE -s The BIOS is updated without any user interaction. To view the update result, refer to the WINUPTP.log file created at the same directory of the package. 11. Follow the instructions on the screen. 12. Select 'Update ThinkPad BIOS' and follow the instructions on the screen. Attention: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. After the update has been completed, the program shows a message 'Flash Update has been successfully completed...' Press 'Yes' to restart the system. Do the following to make sure the BIOS is updated correctly. 13. Turn off the computer. 14. Turn on the computer. 15. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. 16. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 17. Verify the BIOS Version. 18. Turn off the computer. Initializing BIOS ----------------- BIOS Initialization is suggested for some problems. To initialize the BIOS: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Turn on the computer. 3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. 4. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the password. 5. Press the F9 key to load default configuration. 6. Select Yes. 7. Press the F10 key to save default configuration and exit. 8. Select Yes. After the initialization has been completed, the system restarts automatically. Note: After initialization you may need to re-apply some settings that you had changed previously. BIOS Information ---------------- Each version of the System Program Service Utility contains the following system program (BIOS) and the Embedded Controller program. The BIOS Version and the the Embedded Controller version number can be viewed by entering BIOS Setup Utility. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password. 5. Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version. 6. Turn off the computer. Memory Map Information ---------------------- Reserved Area: The following conventional memory addresses are reserved by the system program (BIOS) and others. C0000-CE7FF : Reserved for Video BIOS CE800-D07FF : Reserved for Option ROM of Ethernet (*1) DC000-DFFFF : Reserved for USB BIOS (*2) E0000-FFFFF : Reserved for System BIOS Notes: *1: This area becomes free by disabling the Internal Network Option ROM option under Config and Network in BIOS Setup Utility. This choice will disable PXE and WOL features. *2: This area becomes free by disabling the USB BIOS Support option under Config and USB in the BIOS Setup Utility. This choice does not affect using USB devices in Windows operating systems. Usable Area: The following memory address can be used by the memory manager such as EMM386.
