Press the Other Locations button on the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog screen. 7. Enter c:\windows\options\cabs into the Select Other Location box, then press the OK button. 8. Press the Finish button on the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog screen. 9. Follow the Microsoft instructions for installing the LAN support files. Windows 98/98SE 1. If this is the first time the card has been installed an Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box for the PCI Ethernet Controller will appear. Press the Cancel button. Double click on the Network icon. 6. Press the Yes button on the Network Configuration dialog screen. 7. Leave the Wired to the network box checked and press the Next button. 8. Press the Select from list button, then the Have disk button. 9. Set the path as C:\winnt\options\cabs and press the OK button. 10. Press the OK button on the Select OEM Option dialog screen. 11. Press the Next button on the next 4 Network Setup Wizard dialog screens. 12. Set C:\i386 as the path in the Windows NT Setup dialog screen and press the Continue button. 13. Set C:\winnt\options\cabs as the path in the Windows NT Setup dialog screen and press the Continue button. 14. Press the Continue button on the Setup dialog screen. 15. Press the Yes or No button on the TCP/IP Setup dialog screen, depending on whether or not you use DHCP in your network. If you do not use DHCP, set the proper TCP/IP properties for your network 16. Press the Next button on the next two Network Setup Wizard dialog screens. 17. Enter the proper workgroup name and press the Next button. 18. Press the Finish button. Windows NT 4.0 NOTE: Use this procedure when Windows NT 4.0 networking has not already been installed. 1. Run setup from the 'lansetup directory. NOTE: this will uninstall any previous installations. 2. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now selection checked and press the Finish button. 3. Allow the system to reboot. If you need to add the Ethernet card, turn off the machine, add the card, and boot up the machine. 2. Click Start, point to Settings, then select Control Panel 3. Double click on the Network icon, click on the Adapters tab, then the Add button. 4. Press the Have Disk button on the Select Network Adapter dialog screen. 5. Set the path as C:\winnt\options\cabs in the box in the Insert Disk dialog screen and press OK button. 6. Press the OK button on the Select OEM Option dialog screen. 7. Press the OK button on the Setup dialog screen. 8. Press the Close button on the Network dialog screen. 9. Set the proper settings for your network in the Microsoft TCP/IP Properties dialog screen and then press the OK button. 10. Press the Yes button on the Network Settings Change dialog screen. Windows 2000 1. If this is the first time the card has been installed an Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box for the PCI Ethernet Controller will appear. Press the Cancel button. If previous installation exists skip to step 2. 2. Run setup.exe in 'lansetup directory. NOTE: this will uninstall any previous installations. 3. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now. selection checked and press the Finish button on the Reboot dialog screen. 4. Allow the system to reboot. If you need to insert the Ethernet card, turn off the power and do it now. 5. Press the Next button in the Found New Hardware Wizard Dialog. 6. Press the Next button with Search for a suitable driver.... radio button selected. 7. Select Specify a Location and press Next. 8. Enter C:\winnt\options\cabs in the dialog and press OK. 9. Press Next on the dialog that has found the driver c:\winnt\options\cabs\net556n5.inf 10.Press Finish The network adapter is now installed. * If you upgraded to Windows 2000 from a Windows 95/98 installation you will need to enter c:\windows\options\cabs instead. Windows XP 1. The LAN has native Windows XP support and will automatically install the native drivers. To install an updated driver proceed to step 2. 2. Run setup from the 'lansetup' directory. NOTE: this will uninstall any previous installations. 3. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now selection checked and press the Finish button. 4. Allow the system to reboot. If you need to add the Ethernet card, turn off the machine, add the card, and boot up the machine. 5. Check the Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) selection on the Found new hardware wizard Dialog. 6. Press the Next button in the Found New Hardware Wizard Dialog. 7. Check the Include this location in the search selection. 8. Enter c:\windows\options\cabs in the search location box. Press the Next button. 9. Press the Finish button on the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box. The network adapter is now installed. DOS driver for unattended installation For customers who need unattended installation, the DOS driver (EL556.dos) is included in landisk4\NDIS2 sub-directory in this package. The DOS driver can be used only for this purpose. (LANDISKS) LANDISK2 contains driver files for Windows 95 and NT. LANDISK3 contains driver files for Windows 2000. LANDISK4 contains NDIS2, NDIS3, and other miscellaneous drivers. LANDISK5 contains driver files for Windows 98 SE/Gold. LANDISK6 contains driver files for Windows Me. LANDISK7 contains driver files for Windows 2000 and XP. NOTE: Beginning with driver package version 1.13, LANDISK7 will contain NDIS5.1 driver files to support both Windows 2000 and Windows XP. LANDISK3 still contains NDIS5 driver files to support Windows 2000. LAN Diagnostics 1. Run setup from the diags directory. 2. Press the Next button in the InstallShield Wizard. 3. Press the Yes button to accept the license agreement. 4. Leave the Yes, I want to restart my computer now selection checked and press the Finish button. 5. Allow the system to reboot. The diagnostics will be fully functional after the reboot and can be executed from Start select Programs, select 3Com NIC Utilities then click, 3Com NIC Doctor. NOTE: The LAN Diagnostics are currently only supported in Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. Determining which version is installed -------------------------------------- This driver package contains five types of drivers called, NDIS2, NDIS3, NDIS4, NDIS5, and NDIS5.1. The following is the comparison list for each drivers' version and the driver package version. NOTE: Windows95 uses the NDIS4 version of the file and this release is for file version NDIS4=1.10.21.002. NOTE: Windows 98/Me uses the NDIS5 version of the file and this release is for file version NDIS5=1.10.21.003 for Windows Me and NDIS5=1.10.21.004 for Windows 98. The NDIS5 driver is EL556ND5.SYS. Windows NT 1. Double-click My Computer, double-click C:, double-click Winnt, double-click System32, double-click Drivers. 2. Find the file EL556nd4.SYS. 3. Right-click the file and select properties from the menu. 4. Click the Version tab. NOTE: Windows NT uses the NDIS4 version of the file and this release is for file version NDIS4=1.10.21.002. Windows 2000 1. Click Start, point to Settings, then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click System. 3. Click the Hardware tab. 4. Click the Device Manager button. 5. If the date is older than 02/05/2001, then you need to update your driver. LAN Diagnostics 1. Click Start, select Programs, select 3Com NIC Utilities, then click 3Com NIC Doctor. 2. Click the Help button. 3. The diagnostics version will be displayed at the top of the Help Window: 3Com NIC Help v.5.4.1. Note: The LAN Diagnostics version in this release is version 5.4.1.
