The UpdateXpress CD is a DOS-startable (bootable) CD; you can use the CD to start the system. You also can start the server from the hard disk drive and access files on the CD after the server starts. Always update your system in the following order: 1. Update the device drivers (start from the hard disk and access the UpdateXpress CD) 2. Update the firmware (start from the UpdateXpress CD) Before the firmware update, make sure that your server can successfully restart without. 4.1 Updating device drivers on a supported server running Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0 ---------------------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to update the device drivers: 1. Start the system. 2. Insert the UpdateXpress CD into the CD-ROM drive. Note: If the CD-ROM does not automatically start UpdateXpress, navigate to the UpdateXpress directory on the CD; then, run launch.exe. UpdateXpress displays all of the supported device drivers that it detects. If the device driver does not need to be updated, it is displayed as unavailable. If the device driver needs to be updated, it is displayed as a checked item. If the installed device driver version detected by UpdateXpress is at the same level as the version on the CD, a cleared check box for that device driver is displayed. 2. Select or clear the check boxes for specific device drivers. 3. Click "Apply Update". The selected device drivers are updated. 4. Save all open files and close all open software. 5. Restart the system. 4.2 Updating firmware on a supported server running Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0 --------------------------------------------------------- Complete the following steps to update the firmware: 1. Start the system from the UpdateXpress CD. Note: The Help button is not available in startable-CD mode. To view online help can go to the following directory on the UpdateXpress CD: \help\Xpress All installed firmware components are displayed. If a firmware component needs to be updated or verified it is automatically selected. If the firmware is at the same level as the firmware that is on the CD, the check box for that firmware is cleared. Note: A 60 second countdown timer is displayed in the firmware update window. The selected firmware components are automatically updated when the timer reaches zero. To stop the timer, press any key. 3. Select or deselect the firmware components to be updated. 4. Click "Apply Update". 5. Remove the "UpdateXpress" CD from the CD-ROM drive; then, restart the server. 4.3 UpdateXpress HTML Index and Update Packages ----------------------------------------------- UpdateXpress provides Update Packages for firmware and device drivers. In some cases, an update does not provide an unattended installation method. An Update Package is not provided. The root of the UpdateXpress CD contains an index.htm file that displays information about the Updates Packages that are on the CD, and provides links to these files. Each Update Package is a self-extracting executable file. It can be copied to a target machine by clicking the matching link from the HTML index. Once an Update Package is copied to the target server, it can be installed by double clicking it or launched from the command line. For more information, see the index.htm file on the root of the UpdateXpress CD. Note: The minimum requirement to view the UpdateXpress HTML index is Internet Explorer version 4.01. The "UpdateXpress" CD provides software for the following operating systems: o Windows Server 2003 o Windows Datacenter o Windows 2000 o Windows NT o Novell NetWare o UnixWare o Linux o SCO Open Server o IBM OS/2 For instructions about how to update the ServeRAID software (device drivers, firmware, BIOS, IPSSEND command-line program, and IBM ServeRAID Cluster Solution environments), see the readme.txt file located in the "SRV45" directory on the "UpdateXpress" CD. After UpdateXpress updates the device drivers, firmware, and BIOS code, you must update the other ServeRAID software. Note: (xSeries 240 server) The IBM ServeRAID-4M Ultra 160 SCSI controller and the IBM ServeRAID-4L Ultra160 SCSI controller do not support IBM OS/2(R) WARP(R) Server for e-business. 7.0 MICROSOFT CLUSTER SERVER CONSIDERATIONS -------------------------------------------- If you are operating in a Microsoft Cluster Server (MSCS) environment, make sure you read this section and understand the procedure. When UpdateXpress starts performing firmware updates, it is NOT "Cluster" aware. UpdateXpress does not currently support updates for the Fiber Channel RAID controller environment. You must manually update the hard disk drives attached to these adapters from diskettes. The latest versions of the hard disk drive firmware are available for download to diskette from the IBM Support Web site at: http://www.pc.ibm.com/support. For details on the Microsoft Cluster Administration (MSCS) utility, see MSCS documentation from Microsoft. Important: The following procedure shuts down the MSCS cluster in a manner that prevents disk resources from failing. If a disk resource failure occurs, the Cluster Administration Utility starts a background synchronization, which brings down both cluster nodes. Complete the following steps to update the hard disk drive and ServeRAID firmware in a MSCS environment: Note: To prevent disk resources from failing, perform the following steps prior to performing a firmware update to a ServeRAID controller. 1. Shut down all applications and disconnect all users from both cluster nodes. 2. Start "IBM ServeRAID(SA)Manager" and view the list of arrays, logical drives, hot-spare drives, and physical drives. 3. Click logical drives, and make sure the segmented bar is located at the bottom-right of the screen to determine if drive synchronization is occurring. 3. From the Windows desktop, click "Start" --> "Programs" --> "Administrative Tools" to access the Cluster Administrator Utility and determine which node does not own the quorum disk. 4. From the node that does not own the quorum disk, use the Cluster Administrator Utility to take the disk resources offline. 5. Stop the cluster service on the node that does not own the quorum disk. 6. Stop the cluster service on the node that owns the quorum disk. 7. Shut down the operating system on both nodes. 8. Start one node, restart the server, and start the UpdateXpress CD. The UpdateXpress CD automatically updates all supported down-level firmware, including hard disk drives. 9. When the update is completed, shut down the second node 8.0 KNOWN PROBLEMS AND LIMITATIONS ----------------------------------- 8.1 System Specific Special Conditions 8.1.1 IBM Netfinity 7000 M10 Troubleshooting item - 162 error after running UpdateXpress. When you apply the POST/BIOS firmware update to a Netfinity 7000 M10 server, the update may remap. The server might lose your CMOS settings. This condition is caused by the update itself, not by UpdateXpress. This creates a 162 error condition when the system is restarted. Note: Complete all firmware updates except for POST/BIOS firmware. Then, use the following steps to update the system POST/BIOS firmware after you complete all other firmware updates. Complete the following steps to update the system BIOS and reset the CMOS settings on a Netfinity 7000 M10: 1. Start the server, during POST, press F1. Record all hardware settings and startup options that are located in CMOS so that you can duplicate your current settings. 2. Run UpdateXpress to update the POST/BIOS firmware update by itself. Follow the on screen instructions and remove the UpdateXpress CD. 3. Restart the server. The following message displays: The following error(s) were detected when the system was started: 162 Configuration change has occurred. Select :Continue or Exit Setup 4. Select Continue. The following message displays: Automatically reconfigure system and continue Continue with corrupted values Exit Setup 5. Select Automatically reconfigure system and continue The following message displays: Configuration errors were detected. Select one of the following: Continue or Exit Setup 6. Select Continue and reset the configuration settings to the values you recorded in step 1. 7. Save the configuration settings and exit the Setup utility. 8.1.2 Error flashing firmware on a Remote Supervisor Adapter UpdateXpress does not support flashing a Remote Supervisor Adapter while using the Remote Supervisor Adapter remote control function. In this case, the flash will fail. 8.1.3 One or more updates failed message when running the hard disk drive microcode update program from UpdateXpress. The hard disk drive update program included with UpdateXpress only updates microcode on hard drives attached to a SCSI controller. If your server contains only IDE based drives and controllers, the hard disk drive update program returns a "1" indicating that the update failed. 8.1.4 "Installation Failed" text messages displayed when booting from the UpdateXpress CD. During the text mode portion of the UpdateXpress boot process, UpdateXpress attempts to install several SCSI device drivers. The only device drivers that are installed are those that match the hardware that is installed in your server. The device drivers for SCSI adapters that are not installed in your server display error messages. This is normal. 8.1.5 UpdateXpress lists the versions of the IBM ServeRAID controller as "MANY" after flashing a system. If there is more than one type of ServeRAID controller in the server or the ServeRAID controllers have different firmware levels, UpdateXpress will display the ServeRAID versions as "MANY" after flashing. This is normal. 8.1.6 The RemoteUX application might drop connection to the target server The network connection to the target server might be dropped while using the RemoteUX application command line utility to update an Ethernet device driver (either with the -d or -pkg option). This does not interfere with applying the update, the update results are recorded in \uxlog\ux.log file. 8.1.7 No automatic S3 device driver update on xSeries330 (8654) servers No device driver update is offered for S3 video adapters on xSeries330 (8654) servers. This server incorrectly reports the PCI device ID. Use the Windows manual installation using the following files: for Windows 2000 go to \SGUIDE\ADAPT\VIDEO\WIN2K\13.95.12 and for Windows NT go to \SGUIDE\ADAPT\VIDEO\WINNT\8.19.11b. 8.1.8 ServeRAID device driver update does not upgrade the twintail.sys The ServeRAID device driver update does not automatically upgrade the twintail.sys device driver. 8.1.9 Updating "ibmfe" type device drivers does not preserve settings Updating Intel Ethernet device drivers that are using the ibmfe type device driver does not preserve the adapter settings. Updating the e100b.sys device driver does not have this problem. 8.1.10 No remote package for Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 SCSI Adaptec device driver update The SCSI Adaptec device driver update is based on a WinBatch script. This is not available as a remote update. 8.1.11 Updating device drivers might cause errors to appear in event viewer Errors could be listed in the event viewer since the device drivers must be stopped during the update process. After updating the device drivers and restarting the server, these errors should disappear. In addition, ServeRAID device driver errors may appear in event viewer if the ServeRAID device driver and firmware levels do not match. 8.1.12 UpdateXpress only updates Ultra160 SCSI controllers that use the adpu160m.sys device driver. For servers running Windows 2000, UpdateXpress detects and updates only Ultra160 SCSI controllers that use the device driver "adpu160m.sys". Other SCSI controllers are not detected or updated in this release. In addition, the adpu160m.sys driver supports multiple chipsets and if the improper chipset has previously been selected, the SCSI update may freeze. If this occurs, the user may press CTRL+ALT+DEL to regain control of the keyboard and mouse and manually stop the update. 8.1.13 The xSeries300 BIOS package, 33p2589w.exe, does not generate an entry in \uxlog\ux.log. 8.1.14 IBM Intel based Network device driver update might return an error code of "1". When attempting to update from ibmfent.sys or ibmfent5.sys to the latest IBM Intel based network device driver, the update may return an error code of "1" (failure) although the device driver will successfully update. 8.1.15 A Hardware Wizard window opens during the system management device driver update If the Windows 2000 Hardware Wizard starts before or during the installation of system management device drivers, because it detects the system management hardware, click Cancel to close the Hardware Wizard. The Hardware Wizard is not needed. UpdateXpress continues to run unattended and updates all device drivers correctly. 8.1.16 UpdateXpress will not update ATI video device drivers remotely for Windows NT 4.0. To remotely update the ATI video device driver, use the 01R1066w.exe package available from the index.htm page on the root of the UpdateXpress CD. 8.1.17 UpdateXpress attempts to update the RSA2 device driver each time it is run on Windows 2000. If a server running Windows 2000 has a Remote Supervisor Adapter 2 (RSA2) Card installed, UpdateXpress updates the device correctly. However, UpdateXpress does not detect the updated versions of the device drivers after they are installed. Each time UpdateXpress is run the user interface indicates that the device drivers need to be updated. If the device drivers update successfully, they do not need to be updated again. 8.1.18 The xSeries 205 and xSeries 305 BIOS package updates are supported for certain versions. The BIOS package update for the xSeries 205 is supported for level 30A or greater. The BIOS package update for the xSeries 305 is supported for level 41A or greater. Both updates are available directly from the bootable option of the UpdateXpress CD regardless of initial BIOS level. 8.1.19 UpdateXpress leaves ux*.tmp directories on the root of C: drive. For some device driver updates to successfully complete, UpdateXpress must leave the ux*.tmp directories on the hard disk drive. When all updates are successfully applied, these directories may be manually removed. Some device driver updates require one or more additional reboots before they are completed. 8.1.20 LSI device driver update sends an error code of 28, 29, or 30. These return codes specify that the following steps must be taken before the LSI device driver update is completed. Error Code 28: The version of the LSI device driver (less than 1.08.12) that is currently installed requires that you restart the server twice and log in both times. During this process the LSI device driver updates automatically. Error Code 29: The system BIOS is an earlier version that does not enable the LSI device driver update to proceed. Update the system BIOS and restart the server. The LSI device driver update completes automatically after the system BIOS is updated. Error Code 30: The system BIOS is an earlier version that does not enable the LSI device driver update to proceed. Update the system BIOS and restart the server. Additionally, the version of the LSI device driver (less than 1.08.12) that is currently installed requires you to restart and log in to the server two additional times. At the end of this process, the LSI device driver is updated. 8.1.21 UpdateXpress requires that the target system has the "temp" environment variable defined, and that the directory defined by "temp" exists. 8.1.22 When updating the Intel network card device driver with a Windows 2000 operating system, UpdateXpress also updates the ProSet utility. On Windows NT 4.0, UpdateXpress cannot update versions of ProSet earlier than 5.x. If you are running a version of ProSet earlier than 5.x on Windows NT 4.0, you must uninstall this utility before running UpdateXpress. 8.1.23 Booting from the UpdateXpress CD will not work on servers with more than one IDE CD-ROM drive installed. Firmware can be updated by using the update packages or the RemoteUx application. 8.1.24 Running the ATI package on servers that either do not have an ATI adapter or have an unsupported ATI adapter results in an error message. You must manually accept this message to continue. 8.1.25 Running the command "remoteux -e" or "remoteux -c" may not find all adapters that are in the target server. UpdateXpress displays only the information that is provided in the SMBIOS structure. Some adapters do not report their information in the SMBIOS structure, and are not displayed. 8.1.26 When updating the Remote Supervisor Adapter using "remoteux -f" or through a package, the update returns an error code. This update might return an error code of 5 or 6. If this occurs, run the update again. This update might also return an error code of 8 indicating that the Remote Supervisor Adapter firmware does not match the current server. If this occurs, the Remote Supervisor Adapter can be updated by running UpdateXpress locally. 8.1.27 Video setting must set to 16 bit or higher The UpdateXpress GUI might appear distorted if the video setting color is not set to 16 bit. 8.1.28 No package support for BIOS on Netfinity 5600 (x240) To update the BIOS on a Netfinity 5600 (x240), boot to the UpdateXpress CD and perform the update locally. 8.1.29 "Error in config.sys line 21" displayed when booting from UpdateXpress CD. The USB CDRom device driver will display this error whenever the UpdateXpress CD is booted on a server that does not contain a USB CD-ROM. This error is harmless and can be ignored. 8.1.30 Driver Update Package GUI contains no default selection. If a firmware update is currently scheduled for the next system restart and a driver package is run, nothing on the GUI will be selected. Clicking next without selecting anything appears to unschedule the firmware update. However, this does not change the originally scheduled firmware update. If a selection is made on the GUI, the device driver update will work normally. 8.1.31 Updating the service processor device driver in an xSeries 330 (8674) or xSeries 330 (8675) server may force reboot. Your server may automatically reboot when updating the service processor device driver if all of the following conditions are met: 1. The update is being performed on an xSeries 330 (8674) or xSeries 330 (8675) server. 2. The server contains and RSA adapter. 3. The current level of the RSA device driver is v4.98 or less. In this case, UpdateXpress will complete normally and ask that you restart the server. After the server restarts, it will automatically restart again 1-2 minutes later. This second restart is forced by the service processor device driver update program. After the second restart, the service processor device driver will be updated to the current level. 8.1.32 You must install a version of the service processor device drivers on a server before UpdateXpress can provide the option to update the device driver on a service processor. 8.1.33 UpdateXpress will not update the IBM Automatic Server Restart Service ASR or Integrated Systems Management Processor Drivers. UpdateXpress 3.01 does not update the ASR or ISMP device drivers. 8.1.34 Active PCI device driver update returns an error code of 2 when run on a 7000-M10. In order for the Active PCI device driver update to work on a 7000-M10, the server must be at the latest bios level. Otherwise, the update will return an error code of 2. 8.1.35 Active PCI device driver update returns an error code of 2. If the version of the Active PCI driver currently installed is at the same level or a later level than the version contained in the Active PCI device driver update, the update will return an error code of 2. On some servers, the update will also return a 2 if the current device driver level is 1.0.0.9 or less. If this occurs, uninstall the current driver and run the update again. 8.1.36 Remoteux -c and Remoteux -e may report certain levels as "Unknown" On machines with older BIOS levels, RemoteUX -e and/or -c may report Diagnostics levels as "Unknown". This is a result of the Diagnostics level not appearing in the SMBIOS structure, from which RemoteUX obtains firmware information. This issue is usually resolved by updating the server to the latest BIOS level. Furthermore, Remoteux will also report older levels of ServeRAID BIOS as "Backlevel" although ServeRAID firmware will be reported correctly. Once the ServeRAID BIOS/Firmware is updated to the latest level, remoteux will report both levels correctly. 8.1.37 RemoteUX -c and RemoteUX -e will not report RSA firmware levels on xSeries 330 machines (models 8654, 8674, and 8675). 8.1.38 RSA II firmware update special considerations 1. Before you use UpdateXpress to update the RSA II firmware, install the RSA II device driver. 2. If the firmware currently installed on the RSA II is for a different server, you cannot use UpdateXpress to update it. 8.1.39 The History of Changes field on the index.htm might be empty The updates that display on the index.htm page might display partial change history information about the updates. To launch a text file that provides comprehensive information about an update, click the Readme button for the corresponding UpdateXpress package. 8.1.40 The remoteux -f command will not update Hard Disk Drive or Tape firmware for Hard Disks or Tape Drives that are attached to an LSI SCSI controller. In this case, the Hard Disk Drive or Tape drive firmware can still be updated by booting off the UpdateXpress CD or by using the update package. 8.1.41 On eServer 325 systems, UpdateXpress cannot detect the version of the ISMP firmware that is currently installed. As a result, the ISMP firmware displays as "Unknown" and UpdateXpress attempts to update the firmware each time you run the application. 8.1.42 The Active PCI Device Driver update might display a return code of 2 when you attempt to update from device driver 1.0.0.9 or earlier. 8.1.43 UpdateXpress will not update the Advanced Systems Management (ASM) device driver on Windows 2003 if the version currently installed is 4.98 or less. In this case, the ASM device driver will not be listed on the UpdateXpress GUI. 8.1.44 Failure to extract to floppy at 99% completion There is a known issue in the extraction software that sometimes displays a popup stating that the extraction to the floppy has failed at 99%. In most cases, the xtraction was indeed successful or the user can simply try extracting again. 8.1.45 UpdateXpress will not update the Active PCI device driver on Windows 2003 if the version currently installed is 1.0.0.9. In this case, the device driver will be greyed out on the UpdateXpress GUI. To update this device driver, you must first uninstall it manually and then run UpdateXpress again. 8.1.46 The remoteux -f command will not update BIOS on x225 (8649) servers. For x225 (8649) servers it is suggested that you update the BIOS prior to running the "remoteux -f" command. The "remoteux -pkg:" command allows you to send the BIOS update package, a reboot is necessary before subsequently running the "remoteux -f" command. 8.1.47 UpdateXpress does not support updating the BIOS on x445 via a package. To update the BIOS, use local or remoteUX. 8.1.48 UpdateXpress may not detect the RSA2 driver after it has been updated to the latest level. If the driver no longer appears in the startable list after updating the RSA2 driver, the update was successful. 9.0 NATIONAL LANGUAGE CONSIDERATIONS -------------------------------------- UpdateXpress can be started, on any supported server installed with a non-English Windows NT or Windows 2000 operating system. The same restrictions apply as documented for the servers when you are using an English version of Windows NT or Windows 2000. UpdateXpress is not translated at this time. 10.0 IBM MESSAGE CENTER ------------------------ The IBM Message Center displays messages to inform you about helpful software that IBM provides for your server. The IBM Message Center can also provide messages from the web about new updates available to keep your computer current. The Message Center is supported on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server operating systems and will work on the same systems as the Access Support client.
